Day 3 in DC…sunny and 60s…Today, as the last couple of days have been, was jammed pack with excitement! The day started as we explored the Washington Monument, the WW II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Everyone enjoyed the sites but were ready to take a break as we headed to our service site and road the metro.

Our first service site of the day was Rachel’s Place. This was our second day as we volunteered there on Monday as well. Today our group split with half of us helping to organize the clothing room and the other half help with landscaping and serving lunch. After a short lunch break…where the squirrels decided to join us…we played Bingo with the homeless women at Rachel’s Place and learned that Bingo is a very important activity of the week. We were sad to leave as we spent the last two days there and were begining to become familiar with the agency.

Patrick and Theresa then lead the group to a grocery store and gave strict instructions that the group needed to purchase enough supplies to make 300 sandwhiches that would be served to people who would otherwise not have food. The purchase was made successfully…within a strict budget…and the group then headed to Central Union Mission where they made the 300 sandwhiches.

The group is excited for another full day of activities tomorrow where they will be heading to capitol hill to meet with Senator Kohls staff and then taking a tour of the Capitol Building. Later in the day the group will be serving a peace meal to a couple hundred homeless men. More updates to come soon…
